The chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has said that sex workers, often called runs girls, will be taxed under the country’s new tax laws.
Speaking at a programme in RCCG City of David, Lagos, Oyedele explained that the tax law is clear—once a person earns money from providing any kind of service, it is taxable, whether the activity is legal or not.
“If somebody is doing runs girls, right, they go and look for men to sleep with, you know that’s a service, they will pay tax on it. One thing about the tax law is it does not separate between whether what you are doing is legitimate or not. It just asks you whether you have an income. Did you get it from rendering a service or providing a good? You pay tax,” he said.
He added that money given freely, such as gifts to relatives, friends or strangers, is not taxable since it is not an exchange for goods or services.
The new tax system, which was signed into law on July 26, 2025, is part of reforms to make taxation more streamlined.
