A former Federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, on Friday condemned the killing of an official of the Independent National Electoral Commision (INEC) in Imo State.
POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that a staffer of the commission identified as Nwokorie Anthony, was shot dead at Nkwo Ihitte (PU 004) in Amakohia Ward (RA 02) of Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area (LGA) in the state by some gunmen on Thursday.
Anthony was among the INEC Adhoc Staff registering members of the community for the 2023 general elections when tragedy struck.
As of May 2021, the commission had recorded 41 attacks on its offices since the conclusion of the 2019 elections. The southeast region, particularly has been faced with the challenge of separatist agitation, with some persons accusing the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of armed and violent struggle.
“The attack on the INEC registration center and the killing of the Inec staff by those terrorists Gunmen in Imo state is condemnable. That act of criminality and the video footage was meant to spray fear, but should rather galvanise collective outrage and defiance against them,” Sani wrote on his verified Twitter handle.
