Shekarau to Tinubu: We Don’t Need Senate, Reps

Former Kano state governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has advised President Bola Tinubu to cut down the composition of the Senate and House of Representatives as a way of reducing the cost of governance.

The former senator believes that Nigeria’s bicameral legislative system has led to the duplication of functions and waste of resource.

Speaking on a ChannelsTV program, monitored by Politics Nigeria on Wednesday, Shekarau noted Nigeria does not need two chambers for the purpose of lawmaking.

“Left to me, we don’t need to have the two chambers, the two houses [Senate and House of Representatives],” Shekarau declared.

“It’s costing the country. I agree, a democracy means getting as many involved as possible, but the way it is going on now, it’s almost 500 legislators nationwide; I don’t think we really need this much at the moment,” he added.

The National Assembly comprises of 109 senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives.
