Shettima departs Abuja for UN food systems summit in Addis Ababa

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to represent Nigeria at the second United Nations (UN) Food Systems Summit, scheduled to hold from 27 to 29 July 2025.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, the summit will convene world leaders to review progress since the inaugural 2021 UN Food Systems Summit and to fast-track commitments towards resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems.

Shettima is expected to participate in high-level discussions on transforming the coffee value chain, alongside attending roundtables and meetings designed to strengthen Nigeria’s food security agenda.

The VP will also participate in other events on the sidelines of the summit designed to spotlight real-world examples of food systems transformation, promote knowledge exchange and partnership, “and inspire collective action through evidence-based solutions and creative expression.”

One of the key side events at the summit includes a ministerial roundtable on public finance, trade, and responsible investment to accelerate the transition towards sustainable food systems, alongside field visits and networking sessions.

During a recent briefing by the Task Force on the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit, Vice President Shettima highlighted three main objectives for Nigeria’s delegation: “positioning Nigeria as a thought leader on African food systems reform, leveraging international partnerships aligned with national priorities, and promoting a private sector-driven model for continental food transformation.”

The summit is being organised in partnership with the United Nations, as well as the governments of Ethiopia and Italy.

The Vice President is scheduled to return to Nigeria upon the conclusion of the summit.
