Osita Okechukwu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), has decried the devastating impact of Simon Ekpa’s activities on the economy of Nigeria’s Southeast region.
Speaking in response to the recent arrest of the Finland-based separatist, Okechukwu described Ekpa as a “criminal and murderer” whose actions have led to widespread suffering in the Southeast.
He stated that Ekpa’s strategy of enforcing illegal sit-at-home orders has not only disrupted the economic stability of the region but also caused unnecessary loss of lives.
“Simon Ekpa’s actions have grounded the economy of the Southeast for no just cause. He has destroyed livelihoods, hindered business activities, and worsened the region’s economic plight,” Okechukwu told the Daily Post.
The APC chieftain also decried the role of Ekpa’s orders in perpetuating violence and fear among residents.
“There are better strategies to address the marginalization of our people, but Ekpa’s approach of killings, maiming, and economic sabotage is unjustifiable,” he said.
Okechukwu praised the diplomatic efforts of Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and security agencies for their perseverance in apprehending Ekpa.
He expressed hope that justice would be served, whether in Finland or Nigeria, to ensure accountability for the crimes committed against the people of the Southeast.
“The arrest of Simon Ekpa was long overdue,” Okechukwu remarked, adding that his sentencing would be a step towards healing and rebuilding the region.
The APC leader called on all Southeast stakeholders to reject Ekpa’s divisive tactics and work towards sustainable development and unity in the region.
“We must chart a new path that prioritizes progress and the well-being of our people,” he concluded.
