Parts of Côte d’Ivoire, the host nation for the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), are currently experiencing a power outage, as reported by Nigerian sports journalist Suleiman Adebayo in an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday.
Adebayo, sharing insights after Nigeria’s lone-goal victory against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, revealed that the power outage has persisted for more than five hours and is impacting significant cities in Côte d’Ivoire.
He said the sudden electricity disruption raises concerns about the smooth running of the AFCON tournament in affected areas.
The journalist speculated on a potential link between the power outage and the Ivorian national team’s heavy 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea.
He stated, “There is a power outage here for about five hours, perhaps due to the 4-0 loss by the Ivorians to Equatorial Guinea.”
This development comes on the heels of Equatorial Guinea’s success in topping Group A, securing their place in the tournament’s next stage. With a runner-up position and seven points, Nigeria is also set to advance in the competition.
As the AFCON tournament progresses, the organizers and local authorities will likely address the power outage situation to ensure the smooth continuation of the event.
