Sowore dismisses Pat Utomi’s “shadow government” proposal

Former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore has sharply criticised Professor Pat Utomi’s proposal to establish a “shadow government” in Nigeria, calling it an ineffective and symbolic gesture with no real impact on the country’s entrenched challenges.

Speaking on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, Sowore questioned the relevance of creating an alternative governance structure in a nation where the current administration already lacks transparency and accountability.

“Well, how do you replace a shadow government with another set of shadowy governments?” Sowore asked rhetorically.

While acknowledging the good intentions behind the proposal, Sowore dismissed the move as hollow.

He said: “I would not begrudge anybody who thinks of solutions that can bring awareness to the people… But I do not think that setting up a government with names of people who call themselves a shadow government makes any difference.”

The proposal by Utomi aims to form a body that mirrors the roles of Nigeria’s existing ministries and parastatals to provide policy alternatives and hold the Tinubu-led administration accountable. But Sowore insisted the concept lacked substance and practicality.

“What is the shadow government going to be doing? Apart from the fact that it sounds esoteric, nothing beyond the creation of that shadow government will have any impact on the situation that is affecting Nigeria today,” he said.

According to the Sahara Reporters publisher, the current government already operates like a “shadow government,” marked by secrecy, corruption, and a disconnect from the people’s needs.

He argued that creating another superstructure with similar traits in the name of accountability would only “duplicate dysfunction.”

Sowore instead advocated for mass mobilisation, civic engagement, and direct political action as the true pathways to transformative change in Nigeria.

He stressed that symbolic acts will not dismantle deeply rooted systems of oppression and misgovernance.
