Special Counsel, Ejimakor reacts to Nnamdi Kanu’s absence from Court

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has expressed his surprise at the non-appearance of his client in court on Monday.

The Department of State Services (DSS) failed to produce detained Kanu before the Federal High Court in Abuja for the continuation of his trial. When the case was called up around 11:09 am, the federal government’s lawyer, M. B. Abubakar, blamed Kanu’s absence in court on what he termed as “logistical problems”.

Abubakar, while acknowledging that the matter was slated for hearing, told the court that he was ready to proceed in Kanu’s absence, adding that he has three witnesses ready to testify.

The Prosecution however sought the court’s direction on whether the matter could go on, considering that the High Court has commenced its annual vacation.

He argued that it would be impossible to proceed with the case in the absence of a Fiat from the Chief Judge of the High Court.

On his part, Ejimakor criticised the Muhammadu Buhari government.

“Well, it surprised us. Nobody told us anything,” Ejimakor told reporters inside the court’s premises. We came here expecting to see him And the crowd that thronged here also expected to see him.”

“So this is one of those draconian things that people are fighting for. You see, we don’t want a nation that is turning to a police state. And this is what is infuriating the citizens of Nigeria.”

“And that dissent is showing itself in various forms; is showing itself in #RevolutionNow; is showing itself in the agitation to have a separate state; is showing itself in resource control; is showing itself in #EndSARS.”

“If you are doing the right thing, your citizens will be happy, and won’t have a reason to dissent.”

However, POLITICS NIGERIA learned that Kanu’s legal team is entitled to see him twice a week.
