SSCE: Federal Government Moves to End Mass Failure in Maths, English

The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) has expressed its readiness to address general poor scores in Mathematics and English Language courses in senior secondary schools.

NSSCE’s executive secretary, Tyela Ajayi, disclosed this during the opening ceremony of a five-day capacity-building training for selected secondary school English and Mathematics teachers in the north-west.

Ajayi, during the ceremony, said this will be done through training and capacity building of teachers.

As he explained, the training is intended to build the capacity of Mathematics and English Language teachers with modern skills to impart the needed knowledge to the students and ensure to ensure they passed the subjects during their final examinations in secondary schools nationwide.

In his speech, he noted the commission’s mandate was to ensure minimum standards in senior secondary schools and develop a teaching manual for Mathematics and English Language teachers to enhance their methodology and pedagogical skills in both subjects.

”There is a ray of challenges that some teachers of Mathematics and English Language have the habit of skipping certain topics just because they cannot teach them. Thus making students lack understanding of such topics. Hence, the persistent poor performance of learners during examinations,” Ajayi said.

He also mentioned that the commission was compelled and dedicated to ensuring quality education delivery with standard practices.

On his part, the commissioner for education in Kano, Umar Doguwa, said the training came at the right time, adding that the state government was prioritising the educational sector geared towards having a bright future for the students who are the leaders of tomorrow.
