Sudan coup leader vows peaceful transition of power after 2023 vote

Sudan coup leader, Gen Abdel-Fattah Burhan, has sworn not to run for office in the July 2023 elections. He said this weeks after deposing a transitional government in a widely criticised coup.

Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the military commander, has vowed to pass over control to a civilian elected administration. His statement, however, will not stop other prominent generals from using their military ranks to run for office.

The general also said he is committed to a peaceful transition and electoral process.

“We will honour our pledge, the pledge we made to the people and the international community, that we are committed to completing the transition, holding the elections as scheduled, and to respect all political activities, as long as they remain peaceful and in line with the constitution and the active parts of the Constitutional Declaration.”

Since the army’s coup d’etat on October 25, at least 14 people have been killed, nearly 300 have been injured, and thousands have been displaced due to the anti-coup rallies.

Sudanese security forces fired tear gas during anti-coup protests around the country on Sunday, with protestors in many cities supporting a call for two days of civil disobedience against the military takeover last month.

Hundreds of anti-coup protestors gathered in Khartoum’s capital, as well as its twin city of Omdurman, Wad Madni in the south, and Atbara in the north.

They yelled, “The authority belongs to the people,” and “no, no to military rule,” as they called for a “civilian government”.
