The Nigerian government remain silent since the news about the arrest of Yoruba Nation campaigner, Sunday Adeniyi Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho broke.
On Tuesday, 19, July, 2021 Igboho’s supporters started to report that authorities arrested the Yoruba activist in Cotonou, Benin Republic on Monday.
All efforts to get official confirmation of what happened in Cotonou did not yield result as the authorities did not release any official statement to confirm or deny anything.
Igboho’s arrest comes weeks after Nigeria secret police, the Department of State Security Services (DSS) declared him wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms, allegation he has since denied.
Politics Nigeria learnt that Igboho was arrested around 2:00am in Cotonou on Monday through joint operation.
According to Yomi Aliyu (SAN), Igboho’s lead counsel, his client has been subjected to inhumane treatment.
Aliyu said on Tuesday: “They chained him in the cell where they put him in Cotonou. There was a fracas at the airport yesterday when he was arrested. They hit him in the hand and that same hand was handcuffed, he is in pain and he was weeping like a child when I called, I heard him.”
Igboho supporters protest
Some protesters in Ibadan, Oyo State South West Nigeria entered the streets on Wednesday to call on the government to free the 48-year-old.
The supporters sighted on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway displayed placards with different inscriptions, such as “Self-determination is not a crime”, “Dear Buhari, channel your energy towards fighting bandits”.
The demonstrators add that they don’t want the government of Benin Republic to extradite Igboho to Nigeria, instead they should just release him.
The protest happened after rumours started spreading Tuesday night that Igboho has been released after some high diplomatic intervention.
