Amidst reports of purported defections of lawmakers from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, Emeka Beke, the factional chairman of the APC in the state, says he is not aware of the situation.
Speaking to Arise TV, Beke, the elected state chairman of the APC since October 16, 2021, expressed his scepticism about the reported defections.
He said the party had received no official notification or information despite hearing about the defection through radio and television broadcasts.
Beke clarified the established protocol for joining the APC, emphasizing the structured process that includes registering at the ward level, then progressing through the local government and then the state.
He stressed that adherence to these procedures is fundamental for any individual seeking to join the party.
He stated, “I am not aware officially as the duly elected state chairman of our great party.”
He also indicated that individuals claiming to be caretaker committee members of the party had purportedly received the defectors, but he awaited concrete confirmation of their membership status within the APC.
The APC at the national level had installed a caretaker committee in charge of the party in Rivers state.
Beke has since rejected the party’s verdict and proceeded to court, claiming he remains the chairman of the APC in the state.
