Super Eagles mourn tragic loss of fans during AFCON semi-final clash against South Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria expressed deep sorrow on Thursday over the tragic demise of five fans during the semi-finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The fans lost their lives while passionately supporting the Super Eagles in a match against Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

In a heartfelt message shared via the team’s official handle, the Super Eagles mourned the unfortunate incident: “During our semi-final match, we tragically lost a few supporters.

“In a cruel twist of fate, their fervent passion for the beautiful game unwittingly led them to their final moments as the Nigeria vs South Africa match unfolded.”

The team offered prayers for the departed souls, wishing they “find eternal peace, forever remembered for their love of football and the togetherness it brings.”

Among the reported casualties is Dr Cairo Ojougboh, a former member of the House of Representatives representing the Ika Federal Constituency of Delta State.

Additionally, a sales representative, Mikail Osundiji, employed by Nestle Plc, reportedly slumped and died while watching the match in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Chief Osondu Nwoye, a businessman from Anambra State who resides in Abidjan, was also reported among the unfortunate victims.

Other casualties included Alhaji Ayuba Abdullahi, the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Malete, and a Nigerian graduate and corps member named Samuel.

The tragic incidents occurred after the referee nullified Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa, scored by striker Victor Osimhen, and awarded a penalty kick in favour of South Africa.

Nigeria is set to face the host nation, Cote D’Ivoire, in the final match of the Nations Cup on Sunday.

Both teams secured their spots after winning their semi-final matches against South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
