A former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, on Monday, said the shutdown of telecommunication services by the Nigerian government in six North West states is “useless”.
Sani, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member condemned the insecurity being witnessed in Nigeria’s northern region, which he submits is not improving. He describes the senseless attacks as “tragic and unfortunate”.
POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that the rise in banditry and kidnapping occasioned the telecom shutdown which authorities say is to enable the military and other security agencies to fight terrorism.
The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) had in September directed all telecommunication companies, including Globacom, MTN, Airtel, and Ntel to shut down their services with immediate effect.
The increase in attacks and kidnappings has reached a worrying proportion that the states in the North West have resorted to use extra efforts to stop the menace. The abductions of innocent citizens, children and students have become rampant.
More than 1,900 students are still being held by bandits in Zamfara and five other North West states.
Sani wrote thus on his verified Twitter handle: “The yesterday’s attacks on the Baptist Church Kakau Daji,Kaduna state by terrorists, the killing of some worshippers and the abductions of scores of others is tragic and unfortunate. The suspension of the telecom services in the North is useless.”
