Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, has warned governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging them to urgently take control of the party’s affairs or risk its total collapse.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and one-time chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and the party’s National Reconciliation Committee, stressed the urgent need for reorganisation and unity within the party.
His comments followed a high-level consultative meeting held on Sunday, which brought together PDP governors, former governors, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) to address lingering internal issues.
He wrote: “I had the opportunity to interact, share ideas and give my views both as a former governor, former chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, and former chairman of the PDP national reconciliatory committee appointed by five chairmen.
“There is no player in the party across the country that I have not interacted with.”
The senator called on PDP governors, whom he described as the “operational leaders” of the party, to demonstrate greater commitment by galvanising members and the wider public in order to rescue the party from decline.
“I hope the governors… follow through with the resolutions. They need to work closely together, show greater commitment to the party, galvanise and mobilise party members and Nigerians generally,” he added.
Dickson reminded his colleagues of the party’s resilience during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, when, despite harassment and economic recession, PDP leaders held the party together and achieved electoral victories.
“We did that under President Buhari… we did not bulge but kept the party alive, won elections, and handed it over to them,” he said.
The senator also pledged his full support for the party’s ongoing rebuilding efforts, noting that a new committee had been formed to explore solutions and strengthen party structures.
“It will be a pleasure to work with others in the committee to see how we can advise on ways of resolving all the issues and support the governors and other leaders to save the party from imminent collapse,” he said.
