Tambuwal’s aide remanded in prison after bail denial in defamation case

Shafi’u Umar Tureta, an aide to former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, has been remanded in prison following allegations of defaming Ahmad Aliyu and his wife, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, on social media.

The case, brought before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Sokoto, involves Tureta being charged with spreading false and defamatory content online.

According to the police prosecutor, Insp. Abdurahman Mansur, the offence violates the penal code, and the alleged incident occurred on July 18, 2024.

In court, Tureta denied the accusations, while his defence counsel, Mr. Al’Mustafa Abubakar, made an oral request for bail.

However, the court refused to grant bail, stating that a formal application needed to be filed.

Chief Magistrate Fatima Hassan said the only document available to the court was the First Information Report (FIR), highlighting the gravity of the charges.

The case has been adjourned to September 18 for hearing, with Tureta remaining in custody at the correctional centre until then.
