Tanko Yakassai backs arrest of #EndSARS protesters, freezing of accounts

Elder statesman, Tanko Yakassai, has declared support for the arrest of #EndSARS protesters and the freezing of their bank accounts by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Recall that Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 9, 2020, granted the request of the CBN to freeze the accounts of 19 individuals and a public affairs company linked to the #EndSARS protests.

According to the apex bank, the accounts are linked to terrorist activities, adding that there is a need to investigate the account holders. Also, the Nigeria Police Force arrested some campaigners and arraigned them before a court, leading to more protests and campaigns on social media.

However, Yakassai, a founding member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, in an interview with Vanguard on Monday, opined that there was nothing wrong with the actions of the CBN. He added that the federal government was right for arresting the protesters for causing havoc and carnage in the country.

Yakassai also condemned the #EndSARS campaigners for allegedly killing policemen, burning police stations, looting shops, and warehouses and destroying government properties. The elder statement commended the government for responding to the violence quickly, saying that there must be consequences for bad manners.

Speaking further, Yakassai alleged that the #EndSARS protesters were sponsored by disgruntled politicians to cause violence and discredit the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. He also berated the protesters for failing to call off the protest after the government had approved their demands such as scrapping of SARS and the reform of the Nigeria Police Force.
