Teenager lands in court for Stealing N1.2 Million Necklace

A 19-year-old Barnawa resident, identified as Matthew Bako, appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday facing a charge of theft. Bako is accused of stealing a gold necklace valued at ₦1.2 million from his neighbour, Mrs. Saratu Adams, on May 20.

Prosecution Counsel Insp. Chidi Leo told the court that Bako, who regularly ran errands for Mrs. Adams, entered her bedroom during a routine visit and removed the necklace.

“The defendant, who is the complainant’s neighbour, usually runs errands for her,” Insp. Leo stated.

“During one of his visits to the house, the defendant went into the complainant’s bedroom and stole the gold necklace.”

Bako was arrested on Monday and admitted to selling the necklace for ₦300,000. He was charged under Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017. He pleaded not guilty to the allegation.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel then granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦200,000 with two sureties of like amount.

“The sureties must be related to the defendant and must present evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government,” the magistrate ordered.He also stipulated that the sureties reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case has been adjourned until June 25 for hearing.
