Tension Rises as Organizers Vow to Go Ahead with 10-day Hunger Protest

Tension is mounting across the country as organizers of the planned nationwide protests, scheduled to take place from August 1 to 10, have reaffirmed their determination to proceed with the demonstration.

The protests, aimed at drawing attention to the prevailing economic hardship, have sparked anxiety among government officials, business owners, and security agencies.

Despite concerns about possible attacks, the organizers are determined to carry on with the protests across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

A recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics revealed an increase in food prices, with some items skyrocketing by up to 250%. The data showed that the price of 1kg of white Garri increased by 181.66% year-on-year, while 1kg of beans brown rose by 252.13%. Similarly, the price of 1kg of Yam tuber and Irish potato increased by 295.79% and 288.5%, respectively.

The organizers of the protests, dubbed the “Days Of Rage,” attribute the demonstration to the inability of Nigerians to afford basic needs due to the economic situation.

The government’s decision to end fuel subsidy in 2023 has been cited as a contributing factor to the economic hardship.
