With only a day to go before the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, there is tension and uncertainty in the camp of the Super Eagles as assistant coach Daniel Amokachi has yet to report for duty.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that his absence has raised concerns about his role in the team amidst rumours of a rift with head coach Finidi George.
According to sources, Amokachi has rejected the contract offered by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The NFF had announced Amokachi as one of Finidi’s assistant coaches, alongside Benjamin James, Olatunji Baruwa, Chima Onyeike, and Mehmet Ozturk. However, reports suggest that the NFF may have imposed Amokachi on Finidi.
It can be recalled that NFF President Ibrahim Gusau denied these rumours, stating that Finidi was fully involved in the selection process.
“The NFF Technical Director put all the names on the list, and they chose the best they felt would work,” Gusau explained. “All the names you saw as assistants to Finidi were chosen by him.”
The Super Eagles will face South Africa on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
