Twitter Suspension: “This response shouldn’t come from a President” – Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has criticized the Nigerian government over its recent suspension of Twitter activities in Nigeria.

Saraki explained that the response was not supposed to come from the President of a nation with a large youth population. POLITICS NIGERIA earlier reported that the ban is coming a day after the social media giant deleted a tweet and a video from the President’s personal account.

President Buhari had on Tuesday night, threatened ‘genocidal’ violence against Igbos due to the rising spate of insecurity in the region. This didn’t go down well with a lot of Nigerians who proceeded to report his tweet for removal.

On Thursday, the tweet and a video of the president making the threat was removed by the platform. Reacting to the development, Nigeria’s Information Minister, Lai Mohammed accused Twitter of ‘double standards’. On Friday evening, he announced a suspension of the platform’s activities in Nigeria.

Reacting to the move, Saraki tweeted;

“No sir! This should not be the response from the president of a nation with a vibrant youthful population for whom #Twitter is part of their daily lives and a source of their income and livelihood.”

“This must be reviewed.”
