At least three people have been reportedly killed and 26 others abducted in a renewed wave of attacks by suspected bandits in Kauran Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The coordinated assaults occurred between Thursday and Saturday, targeting several communities in the area, with Sabon Gari village suffering the heaviest toll.
Eyewitnesses reported that one woman was killed in Sabon Gari and about 20 residents were kidnapped during a pre-dawn attack on Saturday.
However, a local resident who spoke under the condition of anonymity claimed that four people, including a woman, were killed and 26 abducted. Among those kidnapped were a man, his two wives, and their three children.
The attacks reportedly took place between 1:00 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, despite the presence of security forces in Kaura Namoda town.
Sources alleged that the attackers are loyal to a notorious bandit leader known as Bello Kaura, popularly called Dan Sade, who has been linked to a series of violent attacks across Kaura Namoda, Bungudu, and Maradun LGAs.
“Dan Sade is familiar with the terrain. His father is a Sarkin in Kaura Namoda. He has even constructed a mosque and shops in some villages. His base is behind Bakalori Camp, close to Sabon Gari,” a source told Daily Trust.
Despite military presence, residents express concern over what they perceive as security agencies’ inability or unwillingness to confront the group. Many fear Dan Sade’s ultimate goal is to overrun Kaura Namoda, the second-largest town in Zamfara.
Neighbouring communities such as Unguwan Sarkin Musulmi, Unguwan Rogo, and Yamitsawa have reportedly been deserted due to the threat of attacks.
“People now flee their homes at night and return during the day. Sabon Gari, Kungurki, and nearby villages have seen repeated attacks,” another source said.
In a separate incident on Thursday, gunmen attacked Kungurki village, killing four people and abducting one person.
The following day, the kidnappers reportedly demanded a ransom of N3 million but refused to allow any communication with the captive, raising fears over his safety.
On Friday, the Secretary of Birnin Magaji Local Government Area was shot and injured along the Kaura-Gusau road, while his elder brother and another individual were abducted during the same ambush.
Two commercial drivers were also reportedly killed, and an unspecified number of passengers kidnapped on the same road.
When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said he could not confirm the incidents as he was attending a seminar in Akwa Ibom State.
He assured that details would be provided after consulting with the command headquarters.
“These bandits strike at will, even with soldiers in the town. Life here is unbearable. We need urgent help,” a resident lamented.
In response to the escalating violence, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal reiterated his administration’s determination to end banditry in the region.
While handing over 140 operational vehicles to security agencies, the governor pledged to deploy all available resources to restore peace and order.
