Tinubu Claims Abia, Other States Reaping Benefits of Subsidy Removal

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that Abia State, along with other parts of Nigeria, is reaping the benefits of the removal of the fuel subsidy.

According to the President, the policy has created fiscal space for state governments to embark on crucial development projects.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, stated this on Friday during a one-day official visit to Abia State.

The President had announced the end of Nigeria’s decades-long petrol subsidy during his May 29, 2023, inauguration speech, declaring, “Subsidy is gone.”

The move, though hailed by some, faced criticism from Nigerians who argued that it lacked adequate cushioning measures for the population.

Speaking on Tinubu’s behalf at the event, where several projects were commissioned including the newly remodeled Dr Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road works, Umahi said the decision was already showing results.

“The removal of the fuel subsidy is gaining momentum for projects, and we are beginning to see the benefits here in Abia State.

“The same progress is being experienced in other states across Nigeria. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure that Abia State fully reclaims its potential,” he said.
