President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has come under fresh political pressure following allegations of manipulation of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws.

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has warned that the president could face impeachment if he is found to be involved in what the party described as unlawful alterations to legislation passed by the National Assembly.

The opposition party raised the alarm on Monday, saying the controversy surrounding the tax laws poses a serious threat to constitutional governance.

According to the PRP, the matter goes beyond policy disagreement and touches directly on the integrity of the lawmaking process and the separation of powers.

In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, the party accused the executive arm of government of interfering with tax bills after they had already been approved by lawmakers.

The PRP said, “The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) is deeply alarmed and condemns the blatant executive misconduct and flagrant disregard for constitutional sovereignty exhibited by the current administration in the recent manipulation of Nigeria’s tax laws.”

The party pointed to claims earlier made by a member of the House of Representatives, who alleged that certain bills were changed without the consent of the legislature.

According to the PRP, the disclosure “showed that the executive arm has clandestinely altered bills after passage by the National Assembly without legislative approval.”

Describing the development as dangerous, the PRP warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could weaken Nigeria’s democratic institutions. It said the alleged interference reflects “a dangerous pattern of executive impunity that threatens the very foundations of Nigeria’s democracy and due process.”

The party further alleged that key provisions were adjusted after passage, raising concerns about transparency and accountability. It stated, “This audacious act of executive dishonesty, characterized by the insertion, deletion, and modification of substantive provisions post-passage legislation, underscores a reckless disdain for the rule of law, separation of powers, and the constitutional order.”

Condemning the alleged conduct, the PRP said the issue amounts to more than a procedural error.

According to the party, “The PRP condemns this act as not only illegal but as a direct attack on the independence of the legislature and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to transparent and accountable governance.”

The PRP called for a full investigation into the matter, insisting that those responsible must be identified and sanctioned. It said, “In light of these grave developments, the PRP calls for a comprehensive and transparent investigation of these alterations and additions to the already passed Act of Parliament to identify and punish all those responsible for this egregious misconduct.”

The party also raised the possibility of impeachment proceedings if the president is linked to the alleged actions. It warned, “If evidence emerges implicating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in these illegal manipulations, the PRP calls for his impeachment without delay. No individual, including the President, should be above the law.”

As part of its demands, the PRP urged the federal government to halt the enforcement of the disputed tax laws. It said, “Furthermore, we demand the immediate suspension of the implementation of the disputed tax laws until all discrepancies, particularly the conflicts between the laws passed by the National Assembly and those gazette, are thoroughly examined, resolved, and rectified.”

The party also signaled its readiness to seek legal redress if the issue is ignored. According to the statement, “Should this matter not be addressed promptly, the PRP will have no choice but to seek judicial intervention.”

Emphasizing the wider impact on the country, the PRP warned that continued implementation of the disputed laws could harm public trust and economic stability.

It said, “The PRP emphasizes that the rule of law and constitutional integrity must take precedence. Until these issues are resolved, the suspension of the tax laws is imperative to prevent further damage to Nigeria’s democratic fabric and economic stability.”

The party concluded by urging Nigerians and state institutions to resist any form of constitutional breach, declaring, “The PRP affirms that no government, regardless of political inclination, is above the law.”
