Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has raised alarm over an alleged plot to harm Prince Emmanuel Kanu, younger brother of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and his legal counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, inside Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.
Sowore, in a statement on Tuesday, claimed that intelligence reaching him indicated that certain elements within the prison system, allegedly acting on orders from “powerful interests” loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have been instructed to target both men who were recently remanded following their participation in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.
According to the activist, “credible information suggests that plans are underway to inflict harm on Fineboy Kanu and Barrister Aloy Ejimakor inside Kuje prison through specially assigned warders loyal to the government.”
Sowore described the alleged plot as “a continuation of the systematic persecution of those demanding justice and freedom for Nnamdi Kanu,” warning that any attempt on their lives would provoke widespread outrage across the country.
He urged the Minister of Interior, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and international human rights bodies to immediately intervene and ensure the safety of the detained duo.
The alarm comes a few hours after an Abuja Court ordered the remand of Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu over alleged public disturbance linked to Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja.
Sowore further warned that the lives of the two men were now in imminent danger, insisting that the government would be held responsible should any harm befall them while in custody.
