Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for what he describes as an escalating assault on civil society, the media, and organised labour.
Atiku expressed deep concern over the current government’s tactics, which he claims surpass even the harshest measures during military rule.
In a recent press statement, Atiku pointed to the arrest of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero as a clear example of the administration’s oppressive strategy.
“The arrest of Mr Joe Ajaero, on his way to an official event, epitomises this regime’s relentless campaign to intimidate and subdue organised labour,” Atiku stated.
Atiku also highlighted the recent detention of a journalist by security forces, which authorities later dismissed as an error. He questioned the potential consequences if the situation had resulted in serious harm.
The former vice president also condemned the government’s actions against the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), calling it a direct affront to democratic values.
“This siege is anathema to the principles of freedom and justice,” he warned.
Atiku urged Tinubu’s administration to focus its efforts on terrorists and bandits who continue to wreak havoc on the country.
“It is imperative that Tinubu and his security apparatus redirect their fervour and intimidation towards the actual perpetrators of violence,” he concluded.
