Trouble for landlords, agents as Lagos govt plans move against rent hike

The Lagos State government has announced plans to sanction landlords and property agents who exploit tenants through hikes in rent.

Barakat Bakare, the Special Adviser (Housing) to the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority while speaking on Television Continental programme on Saturday, cautioned landlords and property agents against imposing unjustifiable increases in house rents across Lagos.

According to Bakare, the state government will no longer sit back and allow landlords and property agents to exploit residents of the state.

Stating that the Lagos State tenancy law is currently under review, Bakare explained that the state government intends to incorporate crucial provisions that would protect tenants.

She said, “Government is constantly engaging landlords, property associations, and developers to promote collaboration and also to control excessive housing costs.”

She further stated that the state government under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to ensuring social justice for all residents.
