United States President Donald Trump has expressed outrage over what he described as a Christian genocide in Nigeria, claiming that thousands of Christians are being killed in the West African nation.
Speaking on a conservative radio programme on Friday, as reported by Fox News, Trump criticised the Nigerian government for failing to protect Christians from violence carried out by Islamist extremists.
Trump, who previously designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over the alleged killings, described the situation as “a disgrace” and threatened military action if the government does not take stronger measures to stop attacks on Christian communities.
He also hinted that the US might suspend all aid to Nigeria. “Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace.
They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we pay… we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping,” Trump said.
The US President’s comments come amid growing international attention on attacks against Christians in Nigeria, including recent kidnappings and violent assaults in the northern and central regions of the country.
