A devastating gas explosion hit the home of Abdulkareem Haruna, a Nigerian journalist with HumAngle, in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday morning.
The tragic incident, caused by a faulty gas cylinder, left several people injured, including a newborn baby who is currently in a coma.
The explosion occurred as the family was preparing for the baby’s naming ceremony.
One of Haruna’s colleagues at HumAngle, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, though details on the victims’ current conditions remain unclear.
“We heard about it today. He lives in Maiduguri but I don’t know the present situation of the victims, we only heard they were injured,” the colleague said.
In a series of tweets, conflict reporter Zagazola Makama provided further details, describing the harrowing scene that unfolded in Haruna’s home.
His words: “In a tragic incident this morning, a sudden gas explosion occurred at the residence of journalist Abdulkareem Haruna, sending shockwaves through the neighbourhood.
“The explosion, which is believed to have been caused by a faulty gas cylinder, tore through the kitchen as family members were preparing for the naming ceremony of the newborn child. Two individuals present at the scene sustained serious injuries.
“In a heartbreaking turn, a newborn baby, just days old, was caught in the blast and slipped into a coma due to the trauma.”
Makama called for support for Haruna and his family during this difficult time, urging the public to pray for the recovery of the injured, especially the newborn baby.
