Two police officers were killed on Saturday when a patrol team was attacked by heavily armed bandits in Sabon Sara village, Bauchi State.

Benjamin Hundeyin, police spokesperson, said in a statement that the team had embarked on a visibility patrol to boost residents’ confidence when they came under attack.

He said the combined team was drawn from the Rapid Response Squad, Police Mobile Force and the State Intelligence Department.

He said the attack also left one officer injured, adding that efforts were already underway to track down the assailants.

He said the police remained committed to protecting Nigerians despite the loss of officers in the line of duty.

The incident comes amid rising insecurity across the country after more than 300 students were kidnapped from a Catholic school in Niger State last week. Twenty-four Muslim students were also abducted from another school in Kebbi State.

Armed persons also attacked a church in Kwara State and kidnapped worshippers. None of the abducted victims had been freed.
