Two rescued from Abuja collapsed building

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) says two persons who were trapped in a collapsed building in the Gudu area of Abuja have been rescued.

Recall that a building located at Close 10, Drive 5, Second Gate at the Prince and Princess Estate in Gudu District of the FCT had collapsed on Friday.

The FEMD said it received a distress call at about 6:45 p.m. on Friday and activated the NEMA FCT Fire Service and Department of Development Control.

Nkechi Isa of FEMD’s public affairs department  noted that the collapsed building, which was under construction, had earlier been evacuated as soon as they saw signs of imminent collapse.

“The two people trapped were in the detached bungalow behind the building,” she said.

“The trapped occupants were rescued by the FEMD search and rescue team who cut through the window protectors,” she stated.

Isa noted FEMD’s acting director-general, Florence Wenegieme, who earlier ordered the evacuation, appealed to developers and individuals to observe building codes at all times, and always do integrity tests on existing buildings before carrying out renovations.

She underscored the importance of employing professionals and providing protective wear for on-site workers to ensure safety on the site.

She also advised that insurance coverage be provided for both the building and workers on site.
