Representative Jarvis Johnson of Texas District 139 in the United States House of Representatives has levelled accusations against the Muhammadu Buhari-led Nigerian government.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Johnson claims that the Nigerian government is involved in a sinister plot to assassinate Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Johnson, in a letter addressed to the US Congress and dated May 10, 2023, implored his colleagues to intervene urgently and put pressure on the Nigerian government to release Kanu from his detention.
A copy of the letter, titled “Appeal for Your Urgent Intervention in Urging the Government of Nigeria to Release Nnamdi Kanu from his Extraordinary Rendition,” was made available to the public on Thursday by Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel to the IPOB leader.
According to Johnson’s letter, Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen, had legally travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, on May 12, 2021. However, on June 19, 2021, Nigerian government agents allegedly abducted him, subjecting him to eight days of torture before illegally rendering him to Nigeria.
Expressing growing concerns, Johnson stated, “There is now growing fear/concern that the Muhammadu Buhari administration intends to assassinate or cause Kanu’s disappearance before May 29, when it plans to hand him over to the incoming administration.”
The congressman further highlighted Kanu’s deteriorating health conditions, including a severe heart ailment and the lack of adequate medical attention. He revealed that appeals for the release of the IPOB leader date back to June 27, 2021.
Kanu’s persecution by the Nigerian government allegedly intensified in 2015 when he visited Nigeria from his residence in London, United Kingdom.
