Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo State, on Friday, said that the atrocities committed by the so-called ‘Unknown Gunmen’ in his state and other southeast areas are politically-motivated.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Uzodinma said this while addressing the audience at the 18th edition of the All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) held at the Rockview Hotel in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
The governor said the politically-contrived attacks are sponsored by some politicians who are not confident of victory at the forthcoming 2023 general elections or who are bitter about past losses.
The federal government has previously blamed the violence being witnessed in the southeast geopolitical zone on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a proscribed movement agitating for independence for the ethnic Igbo group, and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), but the group has denied the accusation.
Nigeria is currently battling several security challenges, including insurgency, kidnapping for ransom, and herder-farmer mayhem.
