Unknown gunmen disrupt burial preparations in Anambra, kill 2 security operatives, 5 others

Unknown gunmen, on Monday, December 30, 2024, attacked a burial preparation venue in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, killing two security operatives and five other individuals.

The incident occurred around 11:20 a.m, according to a statement released by Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga.

The victims included personnel of the Anambra State Vigilante Group, as indicated by photographs attached to the police statement.

The attackers reportedly arrived at the venue and began shooting sporadically, targeting those present.

In their escape, the gunmen shot two security operatives stationed at a nearby observation post close to the Ihiala Local Government Headquarters along the express road.

In total, seven lives were lost, including two unarmed passers-by. A joint security team managed to rescue one victim, currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono, has ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and vowed to ensure justice is served.

This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Anambra and other southeastern states, where security agencies, government officials, and civilians have been targeted by gunmen.
