Unknown Gunmen: IGP fumes at attacks on police formations, reveals next step

Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has berated the non-stop attack on police formations by unknown gunmen in some states of the federation.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Alkali Baba made his feelings known in Lokoja, Kogi State on Tuesday during a sensitisation campaign on the Police Public Complaint Committee (PPCC) organised by the Ministry of Police Affairs for the North Central zone.

The police boss, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) zone eight (8), Edeh Ayuba, charged officers to redouble their efforts in their attempt to provide adequate security for life and property of Nigerians.

A separatist movement has been accused of several attacks against security installations and government buildings.

Southeast Nigeria particularly, has seen a surge in violence, with more than 130 police and other security personnel killed by gunmen since last year, according to local media tallies.

Authorities have blamed attacks on either the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) movement, which is campaigning for a separate state for the ethnic Igbo people, or its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

The group has denied responsibility for the violence.
