Some unknown gunmen on Friday morning attacked the Mbieri Divisional headquarters in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
POLITICS NIGERIA learnt that the attackers arrived at Mbieri Divisional headquarters around 3 am, threw explosive devices at the police station and opened fire on the facility.
Residents described the the attack as “frightening”.
Although the whole building was not affected, part of the roof was damaged. A police van was destroyed too.
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson for the Imo command, Micheal Abattam, said it was a foiled attack.
According to Abattam, the petrol bombs the attackers threw at the police formation only affected a part of the roof, adding that they are already on the trail of the perpetrators.
There has been a spike in recent weeks in the waves of insecurity in many parts of the five states that made up the South East. This has been epitomised by the spate of killings, arson, and other forms of violent criminal activities in the region particularly Anambra and Imo States.
