As part of the activities marking the 2024 International Condom Day, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Nigeria, has intensified efforts to promote safe sex among young people.
The organization organized a road walk and distributed condoms and informational flyers in Makurdi, Benue State.
Steve Aborishade, AHF Advocacy and Marketing Manager, emphasized the importance of safe sex education in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancies.
He said AHF provided free HIV/AIDS testing and counseling to 3,000 people and distributed 75,000 packs of condoms in Makurdi and six other states across the country.
According to him, the initiative aims to raise awareness about the prevention of STDs, including HIV, and unwanted pregnancies through free condom distribution, safer sex awareness events, and HIV testing services.
Aborishade highlighted AHF’s commitment to building STI clinics in Benue State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to address the treatment of sexually transmitted infections in Nigeria.
The International Condom Day, celebrated globally on February 13th, a day before Valentine’s Day, focuses on promoting responsible and frequent condom use as a preventive measure.
AHF collaborates with various partners, including Apin, Bensaca, and the Network of Youth Organizations, to create awareness and educate young people about safe sex practices.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Just use it,” reinforcing the message of responsible condom use.
