[VIDEO] 2023: Dino Melaye attacks Buhari over “sacrilegious” successor statement

A former federal lawmaker, Dino Melaye, on Wednesday criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for saying he wants to pick his successor.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that Buhari on Tuesday told governors of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he would want to pick his “successor, who would fly the flag of the party for election into the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023”.

Speaking at a meeting with governors elected on the APC platform at the State House, Abuja, Buhari said he needs the governors to support him to do so.

Melaye, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and top supporter of the party’s presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar, was displeased with that statement from Buhari.

“The President deliberately used the word ‘successor’, and not flagbearer, of the APC. The negative effect of it is that the president wants to impose a president on Nigerians,” Melaye fumed in a video posted on his verified Facebook page.

“We are in a Democracy. We will not allow imposition. We will not allow the President to handle this country as if we are under a monarchical or hereditary system of government. It is sacrilegious, it is abominable, it is undemocratic, for the president to talk about a successor in an election that has not been conducted.”
