Vigilante shot dead as bandits invade community near Asokoro

Heavily armed bandits attacked houses in Kpaduma 3, Asokoro Extension in Abuja, on Monday night.

The attack, which lasted for hours, left the community in panic as residents heard gunfire and what sounded like a grenade blast.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants came from a nearby village called Kobi.

They said two girls were raped, while a vigilante identified as Bako was shot dead.

Some residents also sustained injuries during the attack.

A resident said the targeted house had been flagged for security concerns months earlier, but requests for upgrades were ignored by the landlord.

Police officers were deployed to the area after the attack and calm was restored.

Residents, however, called for visible patrols, stronger perimeter security, and faster police response to prevent further incidents.

Meanwhile, the FCT police command says it foiled an attempted kidnap in the area and rescued two female victims.

A statement by Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, said CP Ajao Adewale led a response team alongside the Deputy Commissioner of Police (operations), Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Rapid Response Squad, and the Divisional Police Officer of Asokoro division.

The command said the gunmen opened fire on sighting the officers, using two women as human shields to escape.

It said police, however, engaged them in a chase and rescued the women unhurt.

Adeh said two members of the local vigilante sustained gunshot wounds during the incident.

She added that they were taken to the National Hospital, Abuja, where one was confirmed dead and the other is receiving treatment.
