Human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, has expressed concerns over vote-buying in some polling centres in Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) are buying votes with N10,000; N5,000, and N3,000 respectively.
Although vote buying is not fundamentally new in Nigeria, it has attained a worrying level in recent years.
“Vote buying is not just the issue. Vote selling is not even the major issue.
“The driving force of poverty and how it gets weaponized against our people is my concern. For how long shall this continue? A transactional democracy,” Ogun wrote on his known Twitter page.
Sixteen governorship candidates are currently vying for the top seat in the 16 LGAs of the state.
