CBN: Emefiele sent resignation letter to Tinubu in August – Report

An emerging report from TheCable is citing Reuters as having claimed that the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, had resigned from his position.

Quoting Reuters, TheCable reports that Emefiele, who was suspended in June, tendered his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu.

It added that Emefiele initially submitted the letter to the Department of State Services (DSS), but that it was rejected as the law only permits him to submit it to the president.

A paragraph of the said report accredited to Reuters read:

“Government sources told Reuters that Godwin Emefiele, who was suspended as central bank chief by Tinubu in June and later detained by state police and charged with procurement fraud, resigned last month, effectively clearing the way for Cardoso (Olayemi Micheal Cardoso) to replace him.

Recall that Tinubu on Friday, September 15, nominated Olayemi Cardoso as the new governor of the CBN.

Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said Cardoso will replace the acting governor of the CBN Folashodun Shonubi, if confirmed by the Senate.

Ngelale said in a statement: “President Bola Tinubu has approved the nomination of Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso to serve as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for a term of five (5) years at the first instance, pending his confirmation by the Nigerian Senate.”
