Wave of violence continues in Ondo as unknown gunmen kill health worker near airport

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, where a health worker, Akinola Oyabiyi, was fatally shot by unknown gunmen.

The 46-year-old victim was attacked while returning home around 8 pm near Akure Airport at Eleyowo.

According to a family member who wished to remain anonymous, Oyabiyi was targeted for kidnapping but was shot in the abdomen and died shortly after. The attackers reportedly emerged from the bush and fired at him while he was driving.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. “We are on top of the matter,” she said.

The event follows a series of recent attacks in the same area. Just days before, five farm workers were killed by suspected gunmen at Ajegunle-Powerline community within Akure North LGA. Additionally, there have been reports of abductions in nearby communities.
