We want to be partners, not aid recipients – VP Shettima tells EU delegation

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said that Nigeria is more interested in becoming a partners with the European Union and not just a recipient of aid.

Shettima said this while speaking at the Presidential Villa during a visit by a delegation of the EU led by its Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot.

The vice president said Nigeria and the EU need a deeper relationship that would translate to transformative results.

Calling for an advancement in the bilateral relationship between the EU, Nigeria and the African continent as a whole, Shettima said the country is eager to play the role of a partner.

His words, “We hope to see the EU move from being a donor to being a co-creator of African prosperity. We really want to be partners with the European Union, not as recipients of aid but as co-creators of prosperity and wealth.”

He further noted that fostering such a relationship is key because of the shared commonalities to democracy, gender empowerment, inclusivity and freedom of worship embraced by both Nigeria and the EU countries.

He said Nigeria is literally on the same level of commitment to these issues as the EU and would like to take it a step further.
