Seven people, including three bank employees, have been arraigned in Lagos over their alleged involvement in a staggering ₦8.5 billion fraud linked to accounts in Wema Bank Plc.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought the suspects before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi on Friday, accusing them of cybercrime and conspiracy to defraud.

Among those arraigned were Samuel Ihechukwu Asiegbu, Fabian Chizaram Onyeimachi, and Kingsley Kelechi Ejim—all staff members of a first-generation bank. They appeared in court alongside four others: Hanna Okunlola Adesokan, Hamza Zakariya, Achionu Chukwuka Ubaku, and Sunday Osademe.

According to the EFCC, the defendants, along with some accomplices still at large, including individuals identified as Nurudeen Ibrahim and Alhaji Sulaiman, allegedly manipulated data within the Moruf Oseni-led Wema Bank’s system in January 2025 to siphon money for personal gain.

One of the charges read in court alleged that the group conspired to erase and alter computer data tied to accounts domiciled in Wema Bank. The prosecution claims this was done to steal a total of ₦8,568,090,500.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to all eight counts read before the court.

Prosecuting counsel, Aso Larrys Peters, asked the court to fix a date for trial and requested that the defendants be remanded in correctional custody pending the start of proceedings.

However, defence counsel pleaded for one of the accused, Hanna Okunlola, to be remanded in EFCC custody instead, citing her poor health.

Justice Osiagor granted the request and ordered that Okunlola remain in EFCC custody. He also directed that five of the defendants be held at the Nigerian Correctional Services facility until trial.

Kingsley Kelechi Ejim, who had earlier been granted bail, was allowed to remain under his existing bail conditions.
