Aisha Yesufu, a prominent Nigerian rights activist, has unveiled a bold vision for the country’s future, outlining several key policies she would pursue if she were president.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Yesufu proposed eliminating import duties on goods to make items more affordable for Nigerians and to establish the country as a key economic hub in Africa.
“If I was the President of Nigeria, I will propose that we do away with import duties on all goods. Ensure that goods coming into Nigeria are extremely cheap,” she wrote.
Her plan aims to position Nigeria as the go-to destination for affordable products, not only for African countries but also for other global markets.
Yesufu also highlighted the need to address Nigeria’s security challenges and revamp its tourism sector.
She explained that attracting people to Nigeria would stimulate trade and boost other industries, such as transportation and hospitality.
“People coming to buy goods will use transportation and stay in hotels,” she noted.
On the economic front, Yesufu advocated for creating a more conducive environment for industries to thrive, focusing on infrastructure improvements and affordable capital to encourage businesses to set up manufacturing operations in Nigeria.
She expressed her desire to see global giants like Apple set up production in Nigeria, benefiting from skilled workers and modern infrastructure.
The activist further emphasized the importance of education, proposing a shift in focus from traditional certification to equipping young Nigerians with skills for future jobs.
“I will focus on primary and secondary school education and training for the 21st-century jobs instead of certificates,” she concluded.
