The former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha has narrowly escaped an attempted assassination after hoodlums launched an attack on his convoy.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this took place along the Okigwe/Enugu Expressway in the Ihube community around 7:00 p.m.
The attack occurred while Okorocha and his team were en route to Imo State for the burial ceremony of the mother of Emeka Ihedioha, a former Governor of the state.
This newspaper learnt that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State had provided vehicles and security personnel to escort Okorocha for the solemn occasion. Prior to this incident, Okorocha had attended the burial ceremony of the wife of former Senate President Ken Nnamani in Enugu State.
On the way to Enugu, one of Okorocha’s orderlies lost his life during the attack, while the Chief Security Officer (CSO) and a driver were kidnapped. Fortunately, the two kidnapped individuals were later released after being questioned by the attackers.
Expressing his dismay, Okorocha, speaking at Amaimo in Ikeduru Local Council of Imo State during Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s birthday anniversary celebration, confirmed the assassination attempt. He expressed his anger and disappointment, highlighting that he had spent two uneventful days in Enugu State only to face danger and loss in his own state.
“I am very angry. I am angry because I spent two days in Enugu and nothing happened to me, but it is in my own state that the convoy released to me by the Governor of Enugu State (a very good man) to attend the burial ceremony of Ihedioha’s mother at Mbaise was attacked, and one policeman killed. What is happening in Imo State makes me angry,” Okorocha declared.
An aide of the former Imo State Governor revealed that the vehicles in the convoy were heavily damaged by gunfire.
