Why BVAS is not enough to make 2023 election credible – Shehu Sani

A former Senator, Shehu Sani, on Monday said the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) is not enough to make the forthcoming 2023 election credible.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that BVAS is a device that replaced the smart card reader, which was used in the 2015 general elections, with the dual capacity for fingerprint and facial authentication. Its first outing was during a by-election in Delta State on September 10, 2021. It was also used during last year’s Osun and Ekiti state polls.

Despite the assurance by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, that the BVAS will not fail Nigerians at the 2023 general elections, Sani stated that vote-buying and allied menaces must be resisted if elections in Nigeria are to be deemed truly credible.

“BVAS is not enough; Credible elections and the soul of our democracy is dependent on the degree of our resistance against vote buying and its accessories,” Sani wrote on his verified Twitter handle.
