Why Doyin Okupe cannot be accused of corruption – Deji Adeyanju

Deji Adeyanju, a former youth leader and ex-Director of New Media of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday, said that Doyin Okupe, the Director-General (DG) of Peter Obi’s Labour presidential campaign council, “cannot be accused of corruption”.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that sharing his view on his known Twitter handle, Adeyanju said Okupe was not Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), the National Security Adviser (NSA) “who stole public funds”.

According to him, the former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to erstwhile president Goodluck Jonathan, only made a “mistake” by “receiving cash above the lawful [sic] prescribed sum”.

“Doyin Okupe cannot be accused of any corruption whatsoever because he was not the NSA who stole public funds but his only mistake is breaching the MLA by receiving cash above the lawful [sic] prescribed sum. And almost all Nigerians make this mistake. This is a lesson for all,” Adeyanju wrote.

Okupe on Monday evening paid N13 million for the jail term bagged for N240 million money laundering offence.

Recall that Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in a judgment on Monday found Okupe guilty in 26 out of the 59 counts preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Ojukwu had ordered that the 26 counts, which attracted a two-year jail-term each, would run concurrently, meaning, the convict would only spend two years in prison.

The judge, however, gave an option of N500,000 in each of the counts, amounting to N13 million, which must be paid before 4:30 pm (the close of work) on Monday. Okupe met the option of the fine within the time frame.
