Why INEC cannot declare Adamawa election null and void – Senator Abbo

The Senator representing the Adamawa North Senatorial District, Ishaku Abbo, on Monday said that the Electoral Act prohibits the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from declaring the collation of results in Adamawa State null and void.

POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that INEC suspended the collation of the Adamawa State supplementary governorship election despite results declared for 10 of 20 local government areas (LGAs) in the election showing Governor Ahmadu Fintiri in an early lead.

The electoral umpire on Sunday through its National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye said an earlier declaration of an overall winner “is null, void, and of no effect”.

However, Senator Abbo, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while speaking on Channels Television, Sunrise Daily, maintained that the electoral body’s proclamation was insignificant as backed by the electoral act.

“They cannot suspend collation,” the lawmaker said.

“INEC cannot nullify an election that has been announced, they don’t have that power.”
