Why Nnamdi Kanu must be transferred to Prison – Lawyer, Ejiofor

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lawyer to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says the Nigerian separatist leader’s legal team are trying to ensure he is transferred from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to a correctional centre.

Ejiofor bemoaned that Kanu’s defence team are having a hard time having access to their client — although he restated that a court order has now been made allowing them “unrestricted access” to Kanu on Mondays and Thursdays.

“They never allow us to see him,” Ejiofor said on Wednesday during the Morning Show programme on Arise Television.

“And it is fundamental that in a proceeding of this nature, we should see our client. Assuming the trial was supposed to go on a Monday, it means we have no discussion with our client before that Monday. So, we were denied access to see him. So, this is what we are talking about.

“That was why we filed an application to get him transferred to prison custody where we will have unrestricted access to him, to prepare for trial.”

He continued: “We must have a forum to see him, interview him before the trial commences.

“So, it is fundamental that that application is considered in the positive.”

In late June, Kanu, a Nigerian-British citizen, was arrested and brought back to the West African nation to face charges of treasonable felony.
